Reuters/Ipsos

Summary (English)

This article examines the political and cultural significance of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to host a UFC event on the grounds of the White House on his 80th birthday. The event is not treated merely as a sporting spectacle, but as a symbolic act reflecting deeper transformations in American political culture.

At its core, the analysis asks why Trump chose mixed martial arts (UFC), rather than baseball or American football (NFL), for such a high-profile political stage. The NFL is described as the dominant national sport in the United States, with annual revenues of approximately $23 billion and a cultural reach extending to roughly half of American adults. It functions not only as entertainment but as a unifying national institution embedded in corporate, educational, and media systems.

By contrast, UFC is significantly smaller in scale, with annual revenues of around $1.5 billion and a more limited but highly engaged fan base. However, its cultural logic is fundamentally different: it is based on individual physical confrontation, raw competition, and minimal institutional mediation. In this sense, UFC represents a more individualized and adversarial vision of social order.

The article argues that this distinction is central to understanding Trump’s political strategy. The NFL represents institutional America—stable, integrated, and closely aligned with established elites. UFC, by contrast, symbolizes a “parallel America” characterized by contestation, emotional intensity, and anti-elite sentiment. A political scientist is cited as noting that while the NFL embodies institutional order, UFC reflects the fragmented and confrontational energies outside that order, which Trump has now brought into the political center.

From this perspective, Trump’s choice of UFC is interpreted as a deliberate cultural realignment rather than a simple entertainment decision. It signals an attempt to relocate the symbolic center of American politics away from traditional elite culture toward values of competition, physical struggle, and outsider identity.

The article further notes that public opinion is divided. Polling suggests that support for hosting a UFC event at the White House is limited, with opposition exceeding approval. At the same time, Trump’s national approval rating remains around 35 percent, reflecting broader dissatisfaction linked to economic conditions such as inflation and living costs. These figures suggest that while the event may energize core supporters, it risks alienating undecided and moderate voters.

Historical parallels are also drawn with American political figures such as Lyndon B. Johnson and Gerald Ford, illustrating how sports culture in the United States is deeply tied to social identity and political perception. In American society, sports are not merely recreational; they symbolize discipline, effort, teamwork, and resilience. Misreading this cultural dimension can lead to political miscalculations.

Finally, the article places the issue in a comparative perspective with Japan. Traditional Japanese sports such as sumo wrestling and high school baseball are rooted in collective values, ritual, and institutional hierarchy, whereas UFC represents radical individualism and direct confrontation. This contrast highlights the broader cultural implications of bringing a cage-fighting event into the symbolic space of the White House.

In conclusion, the article argues that the UFC event is not simply a political spectacle but a visible expression of America’s ongoing cultural conflict. The White House octagon becomes a metaphor for a deeper struggle over which cultural values—institutional order or individual combat—will define the center of American political life.
