PACIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE－米CNNのベテラン政治記者、アーロン・ブレイク氏が、ドナルド・トランプ米大統領の「異常な言動」について、こう書いた。
「米国民が突然気づいたのではない。ただ、見ないふりができなくなっただけだ」
これは、米主流メディアが10年近く続けてきた「トランプ現象」との危険な共存関係を、ようやく言語化し始めたという意味で興味深い記事だった。
トランプ氏の支離滅裂な演説、深夜のSNS連投、陰謀論の拡散、居眠り、脈絡のない外交発言――それらが異常だと分かっていながら、米国民もメディアもこれまで、「またトランプだ」と受け流してきた。
ブレイク氏はそれを「トランプの異常慣れ現象」（Trump Desensitization Syndrome）と表現した。
保守系Fox Newsとは一味違う、中道リベラル系のCNNが、満を持したように言い始めたのである。
2024年選挙の頃、米メディアが執拗に追及していたのは、ジョー・バイデン大統領（当時）の高齢問題だった。
バイデン氏の、いかにも認知症が始まった高齢者のような言葉の詰まり、歩行の不安定さ、激しい記憶違い――それらをとらえて、大統領としての適性が疑問視された。
だが2026年に入り、その視線は急速にトランプ氏へ向けられ始めた。
ブレイク氏によれば、そのきっかけはイラン戦争だった。
トランプ氏はイラン攻撃について、事実と異なる戦況説明を繰り返した。停戦交渉が存在しない段階で、「イランが全面降伏した」と語った。
J・D・バンス副大統領が停戦交渉のためパキスタンへ向かった際には、まだ飛行機が米本土を離陸すらしていない段階で、「交渉が始まっている」と言い切っていた。
ホワイトハウス記者団の間では、「誇張」なのか「錯乱」なのか、判断不能だという声が出た。
「ジ・アトランティック」（The Atlantic）はこの数カ月、「地下壕」「暗殺恐怖」「復讐衝動」という言葉を使いながら、トランプ政権内部の異様な空気を報じている。
最近の記事では、トランプ氏が地下施設に滞在する時間を増やし、側近以外との接触を極端に嫌うようになったとまで書き始めた。
「敵への執着」が強まり、自分を愚弄した人物について何時間も怒鳴り続ける場面も紹介された。
報道には細心の注意を払うとされる「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」も変わった。
以前ならトランプ氏の演説を「トランプ流レトリック」と片付けていた同紙も、最近では「時系列の混乱」「固有名詞の誤認」「話題転換の異常頻度」を細かく報じ始めた。
これは政治記事というより、半ば「トランプ観察記録」と言えた。
なぜ、メディアのトランプ報道は変わったのか。
その背景には、米国民の空気の変化がある。
CNNが引用したロイター・イプソス調査では、米国民の61％が「トランプは年齢とともに気まぐれになった」と回答した。
「トランプ氏は情緒不安定だ」とする回答は7割を超え、「大統領職に必要な明晰さを欠いている」とする回答は過去最高を更新した。
ここで重要なのは、支持率低下以上に、「怖さ」が薄れてきていることだ。
トランプ氏は長年、攻撃性と予測不能性を武器にしてきた。共和党議員も企業も大学も、その怒りを買うことを恐れて沈黙した。
しかし最近のワシントンでは、以前なら匿名でしか語らなかった共和党系関係者までが、半ば公然と「トランプ氏の様子がおかしい」と口にし始めている。
米メディアも同様だ。
かつてCNNやニューヨーク・タイムズは、トランプ批判を強めるたび、「リベラルの偏向」と逆襲され、視聴率や購読数の面でも、トランプ依存から抜け出せなかった。
トランプ氏は「恐怖の対象」であると同時に、メディアにとっては「巨大なビジネスの対象」でもあったからだ。
ところが、メディアはここにきて、「トランプ氏の政治はショーではない。アメリカの国家安全保障にかかわる問題ではないのか」と書き始めた。
「特にイラン戦争以降、その危機感は強い。核保有国ロシア、中国、イスラエル、イランが同時に動く中、米大統領の感情不安定や現実認識の混乱は、そのまま世界秩序の不安定化に直結するからだ」（米主要紙コラムニスト）
無論、こうしたメディアの「変身」に、トランプ陣営は猛反発している。
ホワイトハウス報道官はCNN報道を「老いたエスタブリッシュメント・メディアによる心理戦」と批判し、「トランプ大統領ほど精力的で頭脳明晰な指導者はいない」とする声明を出した。
しかし、それでも米国内の空気は変わりつつある。
以前ならトランプ氏の異常言動は、支持者の熱狂にかき消された。だが今は違う。市場も共和党内部も、「もし本当に認知や感情制御に問題があるなら」という前提で動き始めている。
ブレイク氏が書いた「見ないふりができなくなった」という一文は、その変化を象徴している。
米ジャーナリズムの論客たちも、ブレイク氏に同調し始めた。
これまで「米メディアは長年、トランプ氏の“ご乱心ぶり”を日常化してきた」と嘆いていたピーター・ウェーナーEPPC（Ethics and Public Policy Center）上級研究員も、「変化」を認めている。
どうやらアメリカは、過去10年間に自ら作り上げてきた「トランプ劇場」の異常さから、ようやく覚め始めたと言っていいのだろうか。

PACIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE -- Veteran CNN political reporter Aaron Blake recently wrote something striking about President Donald Trump’s increasingly erratic behavior:
“Americans did not suddenly notice it. They simply can no longer pretend not to see it.”
The comment reflects a growing shift inside major American media organizations. For nearly a decade, both journalists and the public had become accustomed to Trump’s chaotic speeches, midnight social media rants, conspiracy theories, incoherent foreign-policy remarks, and increasingly emotional public appearances. Blake called this phenomenon “Trump Desensitization Syndrome.”
What makes this significant is that even mainstream outlets such as CNN, The Atlantic, and The New York Times are now openly questioning whether Trump’s behavior represents more than political theater.
During the 2024 election cycle, concerns about age and mental fitness focused largely on former President Joe Biden. But by 2026, media attention has increasingly shifted toward Trump himself, particularly after the escalation of the Iran conflict.
According to recent reporting, Trump repeatedly made inaccurate statements about military negotiations and battlefield developments. Some White House reporters privately admitted they could no longer distinguish between deliberate exaggeration and genuine confusion.
The Atlantic has gone even further, describing a White House atmosphere shaped by fear, obsession with enemies, underground security facilities, and emotional instability. The New York Times has also begun documenting Trump’s disorganized rhetoric in unusually clinical detail, including confusion over chronology, names, and abrupt topic shifts.
Polling data suggests the American public is changing as well. Reuters/Ipsos surveys found that a majority of Americans now believe Trump has become more erratic with age, while growing numbers question his emotional stability and mental clarity.
Equally important, Trump may no longer inspire the same level of fear he once did. Republican insiders, business leaders, and even conservative commentators who previously stayed silent are increasingly willing to publicly express concern.
The Trump camp has fiercely rejected these narratives, accusing CNN and other outlets of conducting psychological warfare against the president. White House officials insist Trump remains energetic and mentally sharp.
Yet the atmosphere in Washington appears to be changing. Increasingly, media commentators argue that Trump’s behavior is no longer simply entertainment or political spectacle, but a matter of national security in an era of nuclear confrontation and global instability.
The broader question now emerging inside American journalism is whether the United States is finally waking up from what some critics describe as the “Trump theater” that has dominated American political life for the past decade.
