Associated Press

Trust the silence? No.

English Translation (Summary)

What Happened to Dr. Fauci, Once Hailed as an American Hero?
The Senate’s Pursuit of the “Truth” About COVID-19 and Its Origins

Just a few years ago, Dr. Anthony Fauci was one of the most recognizable faces of the COVID-19 response in the United States. He stood beside the president and urged Americans to wear masks, maintain social distance, and get vaccinated. For many, he became a symbol of science and public health during an unprecedented crisis.

Now that same Fauci has appeared before a Senate committee and invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times, declining to answer questions about the U.S. government’s handling of COVID-19 and the origins of the virus. The committee is considering referring him for possible contempt of Congress.

The contrast is striking. But it would be a mistake to conclude that Fauci’s invocation of the Fifth Amendment proves that he knows something about a laboratory origin of the virus and is trying to conceal it. The Fifth Amendment protects individuals from being compelled to provide testimony that could potentially incriminate them. Silence, by itself, is not evidence of a lab leak.

At the same time, silence does not make the underlying questions irrelevant.

The Senate hearing also examined more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s personal COVID-era diaries. Sen. Rand Paul argued that the diaries reveal a story different from Fauci’s public account. Yet the record is more complicated.

In a January 26, 2020, diary entry, Fauci wrote that the Wuhan market was not the source of the virus but rather an amplifier of its spread. He also considered the possibility that the virus had jumped from an animal to a human somewhere else. Nothing in that entry amounts to conclusive evidence that Fauci privately knew the virus had originated in a laboratory.

The diaries do, however, provide a valuable record of the uncertainty surrounding the early days of the pandemic. They also document Fauci’s increasingly tense relationship with President Donald Trump, including disagreements over the administration’s handling of the crisis. Recent reporting by Snopes has highlighted particularly harsh private assessments Fauci made of the Trump administration’s pandemic response.

Those entries are not evidence of the virus’s origin. They do, however, remind us that Fauci was navigating not only scientific uncertainty but also an increasingly contentious political environment.

The scientific question itself remains unresolved.

In June 2025, the World Health Organization’s Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens concluded that the weight of available evidence pointed toward zoonotic transmission—an animal-to-human spillover—as the most strongly supported explanation. At the same time, WHO said that because critical data had not been made available, a laboratory-related incident could not be ruled out. WHO has therefore maintained that all major hypotheses must remain under consideration.

U.S. intelligence assessments are likewise not unanimous. In January 2025, the CIA said, with low confidence, that a research-related origin was more likely than a natural origin. Other U.S. intelligence agencies have reached different assessments.

The bottom line is straightforward: a laboratory leak has not been proven, but neither has every alternative hypothesis been conclusively established.

That is precisely why Fauci’s silence deserves scrutiny—but not simplistic interpretation.

There are two equally dangerous shortcuts.

The first is: “Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment, therefore he must be hiding evidence of a lab leak.”

The second is: “Anyone who questions the natural-origin narrative is promoting a conspiracy theory, so Fauci has nothing to explain.”

Neither approach is scientific.

Science requires a willingness to revise hypotheses when evidence changes. Government requires enough transparency that decisions made during a crisis can be examined after the crisis has passed.

The issue is not whether Fauci should be restored to the status of “hero” or recast as a “villain.”

The questions are simpler—and more important:

What did officials know?

Who knew what, and when?

What did they not know?

And why did they explain the situation to the public as they did?

Those questions should be answered through records and evidence, not through political loyalty or retrospective certainty.

Fauci’s Fifth Amendment invocation did not provide those answers.

But that is precisely why Congress, the media, and the scientific community should not mistake silence for evidence—or allow silence to end the search for evidence.

Trust the silence?  No.

If questions remain unanswered, the answer is not to presume guilt.

It is to keep looking for the evidence.

The greatest unresolved question surrounding the origins of COVID-19 is not yet who was to blame.

It is what, “exactly, happened.
